The Joint Commission’s (TJC) newly released study of the Incidence and Method of Suicide in Hospitals is a very comprehensive review of data available from the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) for hospital related incidents and The Joint Commission’s Sentinel Event Database. It disproves the often quoted study that concluded there were 1,500 inpatient suicides per year. It goes into great detail about inpatient suicides, the location of the incidents and methods used.
