This article makes a great case for integrated care in the world of primary care practice. Among the salient points made are the following:
About half of all mental health care for common psychiatric disorders (like depression and anxiety) is provided in primary care settings.
If a primary care provider refers a patient to an outside mental health provider, only about half of the patients actually follow through with making an appointment.
In an integrated care approach, a behavioral health care manager is just another member of the primary care team.
The behavioral health care manager regularly checks in with the patient to see if they are still liking and following the plan.
