This article makes a great case for integrated care in the world of primary care practice. Among the salient points made are the following:
- About half of all mental health care for common psychiatric disorders (like depression and anxiety) is provided in primary care settings.
- If a primary care provider refers a patient to an outside mental health provider, only about half of the patients actually follow through with making an appointment.
- In an integrated care approach, a behavioral health care manager is just another member of the primary care team.
- The behavioral health care manager regularly checks in with the patient to see if they are still liking and following the plan.
